About Us

Alison is the daughter of Ellis and Thora Butt, who took over the Kirkdale property in the 1940s, when it was run down and in debt. They worked hard for over 50 years, to bring it up to a showpiece property and profitable enterprise. Due to old age and declining health, Ellis and Thora handed over the operation of the property to Alison in 1996. Alison continues in paid employment in Canberra during the week, in order to support a proper lifestyle, which the wool industry cannot do at his time. She catches up on essential farm-work and (some of the) housework on weekends.

Tom Subi is Alison’s husband and partner, who now works on the farm. Tom was born in Estonia, and came to Sydney, Australia as a refugee/immigrant in 1949, where he lived with his parents until 1967. He then moved to Canberra to become a computer engineer. He worked in private enterprise until 1973, when he joined the Public Service as a Computer Programmer. In 1988 he resigned, to start his own business in Graphic Design, Computer Typesetting, and Book Editing. However, since the mid 1990s, Tom became increasingly involved with helping Ellis and Thora on the farm. Since 2000, when Ellis passed away, Tom has been pretty much involved full-time on the farm.

Thora moved away from the farm to live in nearby Yass in February 2006, whereupon Alison and Tom actually took up residence at Kirkdale.
